The fee that matters most is the one you can see

A 0.1% fee on a $1,000 trade is $1. A 0.6% fee is $6. Over a year of weekly buys that gap is $260 on the same coins. The bigger leak is spreads on simple buy buttons, which are not listed as fees at all and can run past 1.5%.

Use limit orders when you can wait. On every exchange in the table the maker rate is at or below the taker rate, and on Kraken and Coinbase it is roughly a third cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between maker and taker fees?
A maker places a limit order that waits on the order book and adds liquidity. A taker fills an existing order immediately with a market order. Takers pay more because they consume liquidity.
Why does Coinbase cost so much more?
Coinbase's simple trade interface charges a spread plus a flat fee that can total over 1.5%. Coinbase Advanced, shown here, is the same company at 0.4% to 0.6%. Always use the advanced interface.
Are these the fees I will actually pay?
These are base tier fees for accounts under roughly $10k monthly volume. Higher volume drops the rate. Exchanges change fee schedules a few times a year, so confirm on the exchange before trading size.
Which exchanges can US residents use?
Coinbase, Kraken and Gemini are US regulated. Binance.US exists as a separate entity with a smaller market list. Bybit and OKX do not serve US residents.
